Buying guide
Nitrous oxide tank sizes, explained
Culinary nitrous oxide comes in four sizes: 8g and 9g chargers, 615–680g cylinders and 2000g tanks. Here's how much each one holds, how many whipped-cream charges you get, and which size suits which kitchen.
Quick answer
How big are cream chargers and N₂O tanks?
- 8g charger — the standard single-use cartridge: 8 grams of food-grade N₂O, one charge for a standard whipped-cream dispenser.
- 9g charger — the same idea with a heavier 9-gram fill.
- 615–680g cylinder — about 77–85 standard 8g charges per cylinder, depending on the size.
- 2000g tank — about 250 standard 8g charges, for continuous, high-volume service.
So a whip cream charger holds 8 grams of gas (9 grams for the 9g format), and one 2000g tank does the work of about 250 of them.

Choosing a size
Which size should your kitchen buy?
Occasional use: 8g or 9g chargers
If you whip cream a few times a week, single chargers are simplest — one cartridge per fill, nothing to connect. See 9g chargers and 8g chargers.
Daily service: 615–680g cylinders
Cafés, bars and restaurants that refill a dispenser several times a day usually move to a cylinder: about 80 charges each, far less foil and packaging, and a lower cost per charge. Browse cylinders.
High volume: 2000g tanks
Catering, dessert-led menus and anywhere staff are refilling a dispenser all service get the most from a 2000g tank — about 250 charges and the lowest cost per charge we sell. Compare nitrous oxide tanks.
